Why regular checkups matter

We work around your schedule
We're open Monday through Thursday until 7pm, plus Fridays and select Saturdays. That means you can get in before or after work, after school, or on a weekend without rearranging your week. Online booking is available anytime through our patient portal.
No surprises at checkout
Before your visit wraps up, we'll go over exactly what was found, what we recommend, and what it will cost. We file your insurance claims on your behalf and give you a clear estimate upfront. If treatment is needed, we'll help you put together a plan that works for your budget.

A comfortable experience every time
We know not everyone looks forward to the dentist. Our team moves at your pace, explains what's happening as we go, and has comfort options available if you need them. Blankets, pillows, TVs in every room, and laughing gas are all on the table.

Checkups for kids
We see patients of all ages, from infants to teens. Getting kids comfortable at the dentist early makes a real difference down the road, and we take that seriously.
A few things that make us a good fit for families:
- We take our time with younger patients and keep things lighthearted
- We encourage parents to bring little ones along for a happy visit before their first appointment so the office feels familiar
- We monitor growth and development at every stage
- We apply sealants and fluoride to help protect young teeth
- We catch early concerns before they become bigger problems
When should my child's first visit be? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental visit by age one, or within six months of their first tooth coming in. From there, regular six-month visits keep everything on track.

How often should I go to the dentist?
For most patients, a checkup every six months is the standard recommendation. Some patients benefit from more frequent visits based on their individual needs:
- Patients with a history of gum disease may need cleanings every three to four months
- Patients with a higher risk of cavities may benefit from more frequent fluoride treatments
- Children and teens may need more monitoring during periods of growth and development
- Patients who smoke or have certain medical conditions may need closer monitoring
Not sure how often you should come in? We'll make a recommendation based on what we find at your first visit.

Keeping your smile healthy between visits
What you do at home matters just as much as what happens in the chair. A few simple habits go a long way:
- Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss once a day, including along the gumline
- Drink plenty of water, especially fluoridated tap water
- Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months

What to expect during your dental checkup
Every checkup at Sunrise Smiles includes a cleaning, digital X-rays, a full exam, and an oral cancer screening. Here's what each step involves.
Teeth cleaning
Our hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing can't reach, then polish your teeth and floss. If we notice signs of gum disease during your cleaning, we'll let you know and talk through next steps.
Digital X-rays
We take digital X-rays to see what's happening between and beneath your teeth. Our imaging uses significantly less radiation than traditional film and produces detailed images we can review with you in real time on the screen in your room.
Dental exam
Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw for any signs of decay, damage, or disease. We use intraoral cameras to capture close-up images and display them on the in-room screen so you can follow along and ask questions as we go.
Oral cancer screening
Every checkup includes a quick screening for early signs of oral cancer. We check the lips, tongue, throat, and surrounding tissues. Most patients never need to think twice about this step, but catching anything unusual early makes a significant difference in outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book a checkup?
You can book online anytime or give us a call. New patients receive a $200 in-office credit toward their first visit.
What is an oral cancer screening?
A quick, painless visual exam of the mouth, throat, and surrounding tissues. It takes just a few minutes and is included in every routine checkup at no extra charge.
Can I get a cleaning if my gums bleed?
Yes. Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation or early gum disease, which is exactly what we're looking for during a checkup. Don't let it keep you from coming in.
What if I don't have insurance?
Our Healthy Smiles membership plan covers preventive care for one simple yearly fee with no deductibles or waiting periods. Ask us about it when you call.
Do you accept dental insurance for checkups?
Yes. We accept most major plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental, MetLife, and United Concordia. Preventive care like cleanings and exams is often covered at 100% under most plans.
At what age should my child have their first dental visit?
By age one or within six months of their first tooth. Early visits help establish healthy habits and let us catch any developmental concerns early.
Does a cleaning hurt?
For most patients, a cleaning is quick and comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or it's been a while since your last visit, there may be some minor discomfort. Let us know and we'll adjust accordingly.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in a few years?
You're not alone, and you won't be judged here. We'll start fresh, do a thorough exam, and build a plan from where you are now.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily. How often you need X-rays depends on your age, dental history, and risk factors. We'll only recommend them when there's a clinical reason to do so.
How long does a routine dental checkup take?
Most checkups take about 60 minutes. If it's your first visit, plan for a little extra time for paperwork, X-rays, and a thorough exam.
